A BARELAS ORIGINAL. AN ALBUQUERQUE TRADITION. SINCE 1929.

A BARELAS ORIGINAL

Built by hand.
Since 1929.

An Albuquerque story, one tortilla at a time.

EST.1929ALBUQUERQUE, NM

It started in a family home.

In April 1929, Refugio and Carmen Garcia opened El Modelo in their three-room home. One room became the tortilla factory. Mrs. Carmen Garcia rose at two in the morning to make tortillas by hand for the breakfast trade.

A tradition worth keeping.

As the business grew, Petra Vargas helped teach the family the craft of making tamales. Handmade tortillas and tamales became part of the El Modelo story, and part of everyday life in Barelas.

Still a part of the neighborhood.

Today, you’ll find El Modelo at 1715 2nd Street SW. Come for red chile, handmade tamales and the flavors that generations of Albuquerque families know by heart.
